Frequently Asked Questions

Things to consider prior to purchasing your Mini Split Air Conditioner System

What size system will I need?

Choosing the correct size of a ductless air conditioner is essential if you wish to obtain the maximum comfort available. These systems are sized from 350 square feet (9,000 BTU) to 1,300 square feet (28,000 BTU). If the size of the cooling area is too large or too small, it is easy to have a unit that will not perform correctly.

The size you need will depend on many factors such as how tall the ceilings are, sun exposure, local climate conditions and how insulated the home is but here is a general guide. It is important to remember that if you have any question as to what size you need you should contact a HVAC professional.

  •  9,000 BTU’s: 350-400 square feet
  • 12,000 BTU’s: 450-600 square feet
  • 18,000 BTU’s: 650-900 square feet
  • 24,000 BTU’s: 950-1150 square feet
  • 28,000 BTU’S: 1200-1300 square feet

Can I install this system myself?

Yes, however, installation does require line evacuation. A professional installer may be needed based on an individual’s skill set and confidence level to complete the task.

Does the system come pre-charged with Freon?

Yes, the outdoor unit contains enough freon for standard / basic installation.

How does my unit get power?

The outdoor unit will need a standard AC Disconnect connected to the electrical breaker panel. The indoor unit will get its power from the outdoor unit via the communication cable included with the system.

What size breaker will the outdoor unit need?

Single zone systems will require a 20 Amp breaker and Multi-Zone systems will require a 25 Amp breaker. Make sure the wire size used is adequate to handle the AMP load based on the length from the Outdoor unit to the breaker panel. Check local codes.

Do mini split systems have heat?

Yes, mini splits have heat. They can efficiently heat spaces in temperatures as low as -13F  (-25 C). Cooling only systems are also offered but they will say Cooling Only.

Are DuctlessAire systems Energy Star Certified?

Yes, DuctlessAire offers energy star systems. These systems have an energy star logo.

How long is the warranty on my DuctlessAire mini Split System?

Varies by model. All 410a freon models have a 5 year compressor and 1 year parts warranty.  All 454b freon models have a 10 year compressor and 5 year parts warranty.

Where does the condensate go?

Your indoor unit has a 2’ clear drain to drain the condensate. This typically drains outside. You may need an additional drain line and a condensate pump depending on your specific installation requirements.

What is the minimum length line set requirement?

10’ minimum required for all models. This is measured from the threaded connector on the outdoor unit to the threaded connector on the indoor unit.

What is the maximum length line set I can use?

50 feet for 9,000 btu and 12,000btu systems. 65 feet for 18,000 btu and 24,000 btu systems. 98’ feet 36,000 btu systems.

The colors of my communication cable do not match the wiring diagram, what should I do?

Your communication cable coming from your indoor unit will connect on the 1,2, 3 and ground terminals of the outdoor unit. It will not matter which color you land on each # as long as they match indoor to outdoor.. if you put red on 1 indoor, put red on 1 outdoor, black on 2 indoor= black on 2 outdoor, etc..”

Where are DuctlessAire systems made?

DuctlessAire systems are custom made to our specifications in factories in China.

Why does the indoor fan always run?

Unlike traditional systems that just turn on and off, allowing temperature to fluctuate up and down, inverter-driven mini split systems continuously monitor inside temperature and adjust output to keep the temperature consistently where you want it to be. This means you're consistently comfortable, instead of having moments where you're either too cold or too hot. Inverter-driven mini split systems are smart, so they know how much heating or cooling to put out at any given moment to maintain the desired temperature. And because they have longer run times at lower speeds, they remove more moisture from the air, keeping your living space even more comfortable by reducing humidity. Nearly all mini split systems on the market today feature inverter technology, and they've become the new standard in air conditioning efficiency.

Does a DuctlessAire mini-split system need regular service or maintenance?

Yes, it requires basic maintenance to ensure that it is working at its peak performance. Regular maintenance by a professional is recommended. In most cases, maintenance is limited to cleaning indoor filters and blower wheels as well as keeping the indoor and outdoor coils clean and free of debris.
